I came across a fantastic how-to by Ruth Bleakley this morning! The tutorial shows you how to make your own tiny envelopes in pretty patterns and colors. She walks you step by step through the entire process, fun and easy! Check out Poppytalk for full instructions. :)
A few weeks ago I tried out this Carol leggings pattern with some purple french terry I had lying around. It went pretty well, but I ran out of steam before finishing the waistband and leg hems. Like an idiot, I left them lying around on the floor near the bathroom, and when Brendan cleaned the shower on Saturday, he managed to drip bleach on them. Yikes! I was pretty pissed, but then I thought of this tutorial. What if I covered the bleach spots with some bleach stripes? Heyyyyyyyy!!! Here you can see the original bleach spots, and the beginning of some duct tape stripes. The duct tape I had was two inches wide, which I thought was a little too big to make stripes on such narrow leggings. So I cut it in half by running a knife around the center of the roll of tape to score it before peeling it off: The tape came off in halves just beautifully after that. I eyeballed the placement of the stripes, trying to make sure the tape stripes were as wide as the space between them. I used up all the tape! Here are my taped-up leggings, all ready to bleach: To spray the bleach, I used an old empty Windex bottle. I filled it almost halfway with bleach, added about half a cup of water, and shook up the bottle to mix them together. I don’t have any photos of the spraying process, since I didn’t want to touch the camera with my bleach-covered hands. It wasn’t too difficult, though: I just sprayed the bleach mixture evenly over the front of the leggings, then turned the hanger around and sprayed the other side. The stripes turned pink almost immediately, so it was easy to see the spots where I needed to spray more. I had to do some extra spraying on the two outside folds and on the crotch area. When I was done spraying, they looked like this: Not bad, huh? I ran some cold water in the bathtub and dropped the bleached leggings in with a little laundry detergent. The tape came off almost immediately: I rinsed them off really well and hung them up to dry in the shower: I haven’t tried them on yet, but I’m pretty happy with how they look. The bleach spots Brendan made are barely visible now: As for the Carol pattern, I liked it. The waist is really high on them, but I think that helps—you can try them on and mark exactly where you want the waistband to hit you, then cut them down accordingly. I want to make them again in a floral pattern so I can look all 90’s.

This design is part of a bigger series of hanging structure designed for Novello Alpaca Farm in South Africa.
Working in close collaboration with Jan Jamieson from Novello Alpaca Farm in South Africa Piadesign has been developing a form of upholstery from the alpaca fibre. This function allows for the qualities of the fibre to be fully enjoyed: their softness and warmth is close to the body.
They combined the crafts of weaving and felting. These processes complement one another: the weave gives strength to the felt and the felt gives softness to the weave, thus forming a strong upholstered membrane.
